HOW TO LEAD A MULTI-CULTURAL TEAM?

A German Sale Director works for a French company in his office in Ho Chi Minh City, with a sales force representing more than 6 different cultures (and from 3 different religions). If you are in a similar case, how can you lead the team effectively ? Discuss with Jacques Ferrière, ex-Chairman of Unilever Vietnam, who also led Unilever in Turkey/Central Asia region and worked for years in France, Australia, and Portugal to find out more on cross-cultural management.

Without strong corporate culture, like Unilever, is it easy for you to lead?

I think that the challenge is not to find the difference between them, or to ask them to follow your culture, or believes. The most important thing is that you influence them by share the same value - unilever's value - which I believe that will same all over the world, to make unilever unique glabally. What if a corporate with a weak identity - or let say weak culture, is it possible for you to lead? and how?

I fully agree that having a strong corporate culture helps a lot. It would a good base for building the local company's unique blend -bringing together the best of both cultures, without making compromises that would contradict the foundations of either culture. The leader should not forget to adapt his/her leadership style to the local environment and the company's business circumstances.
If there is no clear existing corporate culture, then this is the opportunity for the leader, and the leading team to build one using relevant best practices in the country or elsewhere.
