HOW TO LEAD A MULTI-CULTURAL TEAM?

A German Sale Director works for a French company in his office in Ho Chi Minh City, with a sales force representing more than 6 different cultures (and from 3 different religions). If you are in a similar case, how can you lead the team effectively ? Discuss with Jacques Ferrière, ex-Chairman of Unilever Vietnam, who also led Unilever in Turkey/Central Asia region and worked for years in France, Australia, and Portugal to find out more on cross-cultural management.

Is it necessary to know that the team is multicultural-based so should there be cultural respect? Is it the key basement to establish the cooperation?

I fully agree. I refer here to Dr Fons Trompenaars' work on cultural factors in international business.
The first step is to "Know yourself", to become fully aware of your own cultural bias and beware of cultural stereotyping. Next you build a systematic understanding of cultural differences in order to avoid mistakes: what is the same and what is different from the other tell us who we are. Through this process, you increase the level of awareness of your own cultural perspective (or bias).
The second step follows naturally and is about Respect, through authentic appreciation of cultural differences.
The third step is Reconciliation, which is to build a "high-ground" path to reconciliation of cultural differences without crushing any of them.
This process takes a lot of "EQ" and resolve to achieve success.
