Is getting an MBA important to your career life?

It is just an advantage to your CV. That's it...everything will come down to how your experiences of management people, tasks, that can tap into the whichever position you are applying for.......

In Asia and the US yes. In Europe and Australia, no.

I am a firm believer that an MBA should only be undertaken by people who are already in (real) management positions. All the theory in the world is no substitute for practical knowledge.

Many people told me about the Vietnamese traffic and their affinity to constantly use their horns, I even watched youtube videos, however until the day I arrived in saigon and left the airport, I had no idea how utterly terrifying it was.

Too often I see VN HR people requiring some sort of degree before they will even look at a candidate. This in my opinion is completely wrong. I would rather have a person with 4 years actual management experience rather than a person with an MBA.

General Montgomery once said, "Leadership is taken, not given". If you are a leader, and MBA enhances those abilities with knowledge. If you do an MBA to learn to be a leader, then the path is much harder.

In the west, we do an MBA much more for the contacts that you make with other business leaders, rather than for the actual knowledge.

It seems to me that an MBA is the Bachelors of the 21st Century.

Năm 2005, trong lễ tốt nghiệp của trường Stanford College, Steve Jobs đã mở đầu câu chuyện nổi tiếng của mình, chia sẻ với các bạn trẻ "tôi chưa bao giờ tốt nghiệp trường đại học, tôi quyết định bỏ học vì tôi không muốn đổ hết số tiền mà bố mẹ tôi để dành cả đời vào việc học nhiều thứ mà tôi cho là chẳng có tác dụng gì. Và đó là quyết định đúng đắn nhất vì khi đó, tôi bắt đầu học những thứ tôi thích, chuẩn bị cho tương lai của tôi…”. Bill Gates là một ví dụ khác.
Chúa ban tặng cho tất cả chúng ta trí óc (IQ), khả năng giao tiếp (EQ) và sức khỏe (HQ). Steve Jobs có chỉ số IQ cao nhưng chỉ số EQ thấp, còn HQ nghèo nàn, vì vậy ông phải từ bỏ chức CEO.
Tôi cũng theo đuổi con đường học MBA và tôi thấy hối tiếc vì đó là chương trình quá chuyên biệt mà một chàng trai 21 tuổi chưa thể “tận hưởng”, chưa thể nhớ và biết cách áp dụng, ví dụ “ứng dụng lý thuyết quản lý danh mục đầu tư phái sinh” (applied theory of portfolio management of derivatives). 10 năm sau, khi bạn có thể sử dụng thuyết này cho công việc trong ngân hàng thì mọi thứ đã thay đổi và có thể không còn phù hợp nữa. Hơn nữa tôi cũng nghĩ rằng nếu không học MBA trong 3 năm, biết đâu tôi đã nắm bắt được nhiều cơ hội khác trong 3 năm đó và đã thành tỷ phú trước dự tính.
Tôi nhận ra rằng bằng MBA là tấm vé tới tự do, trong trường hợp xấu nhất, bạn vẫn sẽ tìm được một công việc ... nếu bạn muốn.
Hầu hết bạn bè cùng học MBA với tôi lại khác, đó là tấm vé cho một trong hai:
- Lương cao hơn và họ cũng hiểu rõ rằng nếu hàng ngày không cập nhật, nâng cao trình độ và không làm việc chăm chỉ giống những người có trình độ thấp hơn thì đó là tấm vé mang lại cho họ sự thảnh thơi trong suốt quãng đời còn lại. Họ bị mắc kẹt, “chết cháy”!
- khởi đầu là một CEO làm việc “bán thời gian” từ 8 giờ sáng đến 8 giờ tối, phải đi tới bất cứ nơi nào khi được yêu cầu, sử dụng tối đa năng lực trí tuệ, sức khỏe và thậm chí ảnh hưởng tới gia đình (đa số đều ly dị hoặc độc thân “là một người quản lý tại Goldman Sachs không cho phép tôi kết hôn với Helen và có con vì công việc đòi hỏi rất nhiều, như vậy thật không công bằng với cô ấy. Vì thế tôi phải nói lời chia tay!”. Một tấm vé tới kiếp nô lệ và khổ đau.
Điều này giải thích tại sao Thục Anh lại không thấy sự khác biệt.
Không phải ai cũng may mắn biết chính xác những gì mình muốn làm trong cuộc sống như Bill và Steve ở tuổi 16. Những gì bạn nhận được khi học MBA:
a- MBA là một cách “câu giờ” hiệu quả để tìm hiểu về công ty và lợi nhuận. Bạn không học cách trở thành doanh nhân ("B trong ESBI") mà là học về người lao động và người quản lý.
b- MBA giúp bạn có cái nhìn tổng quát hơn, nhưng sau khi tốt nghiệp, bạn cần làm viêc chăm chỉ để tìm hiểu sâu hơn và cụ thể hơn. Mọi thứ mới chỉ là bắt đầu. Ngày nay, một người có thể “mua” bằng MBA, khi đó thì càng phải nỗ lực hơn nữa để tìm hiểu, làm việc và có kinh nghiệm.
Kinh nghiệm là tối quan trong. Tôi không nghĩ vậy vì bạn cần phải biết cách học. Bạn tôi mở một nhà máy sản xuất đồ gỗ sau khi có 30 năm kinh nghiệm trong lĩnh vực sales, mua bán, trao đổi cho một công ty bán lẻ lớn nhất ở Châu Âu. Bạn tôi nghĩ rằng đã hiểu rõ bí quyết thành công vì đã là một người quản lý thành công (manager not including CEO). Khi làm CEO và sản xuất, bạn tôi không biết đang thiếu kiến thức về tài chính, kế toán và chế biến công nghiệp … ở Việt Nam. Sau 3 năm hoạt động, bạn tôi đã mất tất cả: tiền bạc, gia đình, bạn bè, nhân viên và sự kính trọng, khoản nợ của bạn tôi lên tới $350,000. Tôi cầu nguyện cho phần đờ còn lại của cậu ta.

1. Employers are increasingly seeking leaders with formal qualifications such as an MBA.

Recruiters seek the most suitable and qualified managers to run their organizations. They understand that applicant's practical knowledge and career history are important but so is the formal education which binds the manager's experience and professional affiliations together. 2. 61% of graduates chose a Masters in Business Administration to change career direction.

Tôi cũng đã dành thời gian khá dài cho việc học MBA. Thành thật mà nói, các bạn hoàn toàn có thể tự tìm hiểu và tự học những kiến thức này sau khi xem Curriculum của trường. Điều có giá trị hơn khi bạn tới school đó là được trao đổi với giáo viên, những người có kinh nghiệm thực tế và kiến thức chuyên môn về những lĩnh vực bạn cần hỏi. Hơn nữa, khi bạn là part-time MBA student thì bạn còn học được bài học thực tế về time management, không dễ để làm việc 40h/week mà vẫn hoàn thành bài tập đồ sộ ở trường. Tôi nhận thấy vừa đi học, vừa đi làm hay hơn rất nhiều việc nghỉ làm để đi học. (1) bạn vẫn có tiền để trả học phí; (2) bạn áp dụng được luôn kiến thức vào công việc của mình, đặc biệt là communication skill, hầu hết sự trục trặc trong công việc đều do misunderstanding mà ra; (3) khi bạn có kinh nghiệm đi làm rồi, bạn tự tin hơn trong việc thể hiện quan điểm cá nhân; (4) bạn sẽ có relationship với chính những người bạn trong lớp, quá nửa trong số họ cũng có tham vọng gì đó và cũng đang đầu tư vào tương lai giống bạn :D; (5) bạn có cơ hội thực hành kỹ năng leadership của mình vì khi làm bài tập nhóm, bạn sẽ đóng vai leader (randomly), các thành viên trong nhóm đến từ rất nhiều ngành nghề khác nhau, mỗi người tiếp cận vấn đề theo một kiểu, bạn không phải là người giỏi chuyên môn của họ hơn họ, vậy phải làm sao để giải quyết bài tập này (không vì mục đích điểm số, mà phải có tính khả thi nhé), hơn nữa, ai cũng có việc riêng, đề ra tiến độ làm bài thế nào cho hợp lý và contact với họ đúng thời điểm? Những điều nhỏ nhỏ đó cũng tạo nên kỹ năng xử lý tình huống cho bạn khi làm việc tại công ty vì không phải lúc nào công việc cũng theo ý mình.

Hiện tại tôi chưa ở tầm quản lý nhưng những kiến thức từ MBA vẫn rất có ích đối với tôi. Các bạn nhân viên như tôi hoàn toàn có thể tư vấn cho sếp về những lĩnh vực bạn biết (ngoài công việc hàng ngày của bạn). Tôi quan sát thấy rằng cùng 1 vị trí nhưng bạn nào có tố chất và chịu khó tự học hơn thì làm việc vẫn hơn hẳn đồng nghiệp. Đúng là MBA không là nhân tố giúp bạn đổi đời nhưng nó sẽ cho bạn tinh thần làm chủ, linh hoạt và hạn chế mắc sai lầm. Với những bạn sinh viên mới ra trường thì tôi nghĩ chưa nên học MBA vì các bạn chưa hề đụng vào thực tế, các bạn sẽ chưa thấy thấm từ những kiến thức của chương trình MBA.
