You need to identify the self interest of those individuals and how your organization may be of interest to them. So, for example, you may have an environmental group. You can sway the minds and souls of many including those interested in many areas - clean air/water, animal rights, even vegetarians. It may sound funny but that is what you are doing - matching the mission of your group with the interests of your members. Sometimes it is helping potential members understand that alignment through subtle communication.

As for leaders of your group, it is similar. You may have a theater arts group in need of a marketing volunteer. The group does not need to find someone interested in theater arts and marketing as much as a marketing person who wants to volunteer their time.
