That is a tough question, especially for me. I held four jobs from 13 years old until I graduated college, so back then I moved every couple of years. Twenty seven years ago I graduated college - I graduated on May 13th and started work on May 14th and never left. That is unusual.

I think first is identify what makes you happy and setting goals. I had fairly lofty goals. I would set up a two year goal for myself and after achieving that goal I would move on to my next set of goals. I did look outside my company but was always lucky that a new position became available to me that satisfied my desires. I also worked very hard and sought education and certifications. Now that I am in my current position I look to take on more responsibilities and also do things outside of work - teaching, Board memberships, volunteering, and writing. Defining your goals and desires comes first and if your position does not satisfy those desires then it is time to look for something new.

Now for something to think about. I learned this from someone who works for me and is about ten years older than me. I have learned a lot from him. I was a young manager when one day I found he was applying to positions in other companies. I asked him what he was doing. He said not to worry. He always applies to other jobs. He said he finds balance in that. He went on to explain that it lets him appreciate that his job is good. I still did not understand.

He said that we often create in our minds the ideal job. A position we can find elsewhere that is so much better than the job we have now. It usually is a job with routine hours, close to home and close to restaurants where you can go out to lunch. The people are friendly and you have a very nice work space. Everyday the company's CEO comes by and welcomes everyone, thanking them for working. The ideal job will make your current job seem awful. He said that applying to other jobs reminds him that there is no ideal job and helps him appreciate his current job.

So identify your desires, set goals that help satisfy those desires, keep refining your understanding of your desires and set new goals. Most of all, avoid dreaming about the ideal job as it will just obscure your vision.

PS - @Phuong Hoang - It takes great courage to do what you did - to identify what you really needed to be happy and make that change.

I quit jobs 2 times before. And this is how I knew it:
    - Logically there is no obvious reasons to quit the job but deep down I know I want to join a bigger journey ( 1 time to start Caravat & recently to start Anphabe) (very hard to explain this feeling but people may call it gut feeling)
    - I feel fear yet the little voice inside keep telling me: The only way to overcome this fear is to do it (I've experience many times that if I have this dreadful fear and still keep going, the result turn out beautifully)

So if you feel don't with the current job, even you don't have a very clear of what next, just move on. There's a will then there's a way!

    - When you wake up in the morning but want to do something else , NOT going to work
    - When you talk about work but your mind think of your personal other plan
    - When you speak to colleague and telling yourself I don't feel good being around these people

If you find yourself asking this question, it is time to move on.

Too often, people look at their job as a "block of time" in their career. They wait for one job to near conclusion, either through some level of unhappiness or maybe even being laid off, and then they become "awake" and take purposeful steps to move their career to the next level (or unfortunately the same level in many cases).

I suggest that people remain awake and constantly manage control of their careers. Instead of blocks of time, people should expect constant career growth. The best companies will identify the best workers and help them along this path through advancement within the same company, because it is in their mutual interest to do so. Unfortunately, most companies do not do this, so you are left to your own career management.

Always expect more out of yourself in your career and seek real career growth wherever you can find it. If you find yourself asking if it is time to leave your current company, you've already answered the question.

it can be difficult to determine whether you can get what you need from the company you’re at or whether it’s time to stage a breakout. It’s tough making the decision to quit your job, especially now with the unemployment so high. Some people try to stick out a job they don’t love out of fear they’ll get labeled as a “job hopper” or have trouble finding the next gig (after all, most recruiters prefer to hire people who are already employed). Others find that leaving a stressful job frees them up emotionally and logistically to find the next job.
I left my full-time copywriting job two years ago to focus on freelance projects. I had some concerns, but it felt like the right time, because I was getting so many freelance writing projects that I had to turn many of them away due to my day job. Other times I’ve left job because there was nowhere for me to advance in the company or because the corporate culture wasn’t a fit for me (those times I had new jobs before I left or within a day of giving my resignation).

It depends on your goals. For me, it's very simple. Once I feel that there's no more opportunities to learn new skills or there's no more motivation, it's time to find a new challenge. The reason is that without motivation, you cannot achieve successes. Without successes, you cannot claim high on your career path.

Before deciding whether to leave your company, you should think carefully. Writing out your goals and matching with your daily activities at your company to see if you're on the right track. If you're still doing good, of course there's a lot motivation. Otherwise, you should look around to see new opportunities.

I have the same idea with Thao Le, I think that, there is a reason that is you’ve built up your side business and you’re ready to focus on it full-time.
I wouldn’t recommend leaving your day job simply because you want to write the Great American Novel or dream of finally starting your own widget business. Freelancing or starting a business are both a lot harder than they look! If you’ve been doing it for awhile and you have a plan, though, these can be a very rewarding way to escape your cubicle and build something out of your creative passions. Don’t make this jump simply because you’re unhappy in your current job. Many freelancers start writing, designing, or coding on the side, then eventually transition to part-time employee or jump into full-time freelancing with both feet. However, if your company has a policy against moonlighting, you may have to re-negotiate that part of your contract or find another job that’s more flexible.
