In my case, I decided to leave former company when I found my way to go ahead. I had an alternative to utilize company as a place to realize my dream though, it seemed to me, my dream didn't fit to the company's playing field and direction.
Sometimes, I see some people's misunderstanding of company. That is, people consider company "HIRES" employee. This is true, but on the hand, we can consider that the company is the place where our dream will become true. It is the better situation when company wants a person, and a person wants the company to do what a person wants to do.
Unfortunately, I also see some people who leave company before finding what a person would like to do.
Those people leave company by the reasons such as low salary, uncomfortable working environment, lack of opportunities, not good human relationship, whatever without noticing the true reason exists a person itself.
We can not change others, all we can do is change ourselves. Before noticing what really a person would like to do, all the retirement from the companies will become just escape from reality and endless search for the heaven which doesn't exist.-

I have changed jobs several times, for new experiences when 20's, for career move-up when 30's, and for money and inspiration in jobs nowadays. I often justify the time to change jobs by two simple questions:
1. Do I feel motivated and inspired to go to the office every morning? If motivation and inspiration nolonger exist, I have to find out the reasons - the job, the paid, the boss, the policy, etc, and then the second question comes.
2. Am I still useful to the organisation or the people there? If the answer is NO, and there's no way to improve it, then it is better to find a new place that I can find myself helpful and value added.
This is true to me, but maybe of no use to others.
