Novels often help us understand people and cultures. We are all alike and even though cultures may be different people and personalities are comparable across cultures. Famous authors like Mark Twain, Washington Irving (especially Rip Van Winkle), Yu Hua, etc. For your own "mini" library buy The Norton Anthology of American Literature which is a collection o American Authors in one book. You can read various authors and if you like one then you can find other books they have written.
