    I don't think ask a question always a better ways to guide your staffs. Being a staff, I feel frustrated by managers when I come for help, but they give me a question.
    So for me It's more importance that you should know what questions to ask and of whom, how urgent it is. So - when seeking answers with an open mind, you should try to formulate the right questions for the right people. You should give direction and answers when urgent tasks are reading a deadline, when an emergency arises or in a crisis situation.

    @ Dang Thi Hoa: Boss sometime is not the "Aladin" who can answer all of your question instantly. Very often, they need extra information and asking you can help you & of course help them to
    - Get all need information for the decision making process
    - Sharpen the problem, so that you can easier find the solution
    - A way of coaching on how to look at thing from a bigger perspective...

    So be more positive to your boss if he/ she likes to ask back.

    For me, when being asked, I often ask this question "How about you, what do you think?" This help me to understand the other points of view , so that I can sharpen mind; show my appreciation for them; and also create a good mood of 2 way communication

    Asking is a skills which need to practice. It is not easy to ask questions if you are not familiar with that. Growing up in Vietnamese context, it is a challenge for me because we did not ask many times.
    However, in my work, I met many manager who are perfect in asking questions, and I learn a lot from them. When you ask your staff, firstly you showed that you are listening to them. It will encourage your staff because you are respectful in them. Some questions like Why you choose..., Are you really think about it? and How?... I am happy you said that but How do we do?... When do you expect to finish this work?.

    I answer when the questions is related to matter of principle or formula that the answer is fixed, but just for 1 time or max 2 times. After that, I ask them to find themselves. However, depend on the concrete situation, I can guide them.
    - For the question related to logic that the answer is diversified, I dont answer directly but by asking them the open question to lead them find the answers for themselves and help them to select the most suitable solution.

    Although manager should be supportive to staffs, it doesn't mean that manager should resolve issues for staffs, instead it is better for manager to advice and provide guidance. With this in mind, I never tell my staffs exactly what they need to do to resolve their issues when they come for me. Instead, I asked them whether they spent time figuring out root causes of problem and their recommended suggestions/solutions, then take it from there for discussion. If manager always answer to all questions from staffs, then this doesn't help staffs to advance in their career and staffs tend to put all "monkeys on shoulder of manager".
