    Agree that the size of companies not have effect here, big or small, talents still go if you don’t know how to keep them.
    In my opinion, talent usually leaving companies causing a team mates somewhere, top talent like to work with other top talents, so If you want to keep your best people, make sure they’re surrounded by other great people.
    Secondly sometime working follows their passion, they are not driven by money and power, to fill it up, you need to find a project that ignites their passion. There are too many things to do in big companies, they usually don’t have people going around to their best and brightest asking them if they’re enjoying their current projects or if they want to work on something new that they’re really interested in which would help the company. Dispite of opportunity to be a part of something will change the world, and for which they are really passionate, big companies still never spend the time to figure this out with those people.

    Sometime when the company becomes too big, it's hard for people to feel the ownership of what they are doing cause they can only do a small part of the whole project. And what drive people is not only money but aso the pride of owing st and doing st that add value to other. People move from big companies to smaller company to have feeling of "it's better be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond"

    Because big companies are finance-focus and need short-term ROI ; so, talents are only considered as a cost regardless of their capacity to bring more value to their company.

    A talent has a cost but also a potential that need to be assessed on the long run (3 to 5 years at least) and that's too long for most of big companies that request an immediate "return on cost".

    Today, businesses are growing based on people not on assets. Too many service-based companies are still "administrating" their personnel like workers in a factory : payroll based on working hours, rigid cost control decoupled from company strategy (if they have a strategy), management based on fear, etc.
    This type of company is dying by cost-cutting and loss of creativity.

    There is some big companies that still understand what is a talent and it is mostly in IT industry.

    Retaining the best talents is like marriage. and probably the rate of divorce is the same ;-)
    You love each other and see your future together. then at least 10 things happen to separate you from the company (both way):
    1- Inside we see the problems of the company/spouse, you think (about changing)...
    2- the company see your weaknesses, they think...
    3- you meet an attractive offer (or you think another one is better for you), you think
    4- a company want you, you think...
    5- you change lifestyle need more money, you think...
    6- she change lifestyle need more shopping, she thinks...
    7- company grow more people (or abroad to Europe they send you) you can't, they think...
    8- you want to grow they can't (want a baby boy, she can't), you think...
    9- you change spirit more freedom, they can't let you work independent, you think...
    10- she becomes very jealous and regulate you too much, you think...

    NB. Mai, I think your question is not a failure but the life itself is changes and as above sometimes we find we should not have married, we have found another love etc... then it is not a failure to change on both side.
