Would you hire a hard working person over a more knowledgeable person?
Person A: Hard working, always willing to learn. Doesn't have much knowledge, but works his butt off. Very dedicated to accomplishing the goal.
Person B: Knows 3 times (literally) more than person A, smarter and understands what's best. He's a thoughtful architect. But, he works half as much because he's lazy and doesn't care much.

I think person B is better. I don't believe that a lazy person can have much more knowledge then the other. He may be lazy as he don't like his manager/ his current work. It depend on you to motivate him and give him his desired work.
A person who is hardworking and willing to learn must have broad knowledge. If he doesn't then he may be not suitable to what he is doing. I have experience with several hardworking people. They are willing to work overtime without pay to finish their task. But then what is done is not what is expected.-

What an easy job you have! Pascals use of the word 'hybrid' brings to mind the perfect solution but our genetic engineers aren't quite there yet unfortunately. I think that there is some critical information missing from your scenario: What needs to be achieved? Both candidates have desirable qualities.
In general terms I think that A would be better suited to the high turnover environment, where the goals are clear and specific but achieved under constant pressure. They will just keep going until the job is done and they are likely more receptive to in-house training that meets the needs of the tasks required. Risk - Burnout.
Candidate B sounds much more suited to the strategic/business development 'think-tank' where in general there is a lot less steam coming from under the office door, and fewer people in the company even know what they do, but there contribution is hoped to hold value over a much longer term and will likely reproduce value even when they are long gone from the company. Maybe not so receptive to input from in-house training, preferring to self-study. Risk - the need for diversity taking them away from the company to quickly before anything of real value has been contributed.
To conclude I would say that they are both not suited to the same post or achieving the same goals.-

From my experience, I would like to await a German company to hire person C who has the knowledge of persion B, the abilities of person A, plus 20 years working experience plus not being older than 25 years....
Needless to mention, that person doesn't exist at all - that's why the German industry is always complaining about the inability to find qualified staff !-

It really depends on what you need (targeted value) to pick the right one. If you have already a good manager to manage this position, then A is the better choice.
